I want to be straight about this one upfront: I've flown into Hangzhou for work more times over the past twenty years than I can accurately count, and I've never once set foot on Zhejiang University's campus. This isn't one of the personal-texture university pages some other cities on this site get. It's a researched, sourced profile — closer in spirit to the Chongqing and Guangzhou pages than to Shanghai's or Dalian's.
What follows is what Zhejiang University's own materials, and the rankings bodies that track it, actually say — not what I remember, because there's nothing to remember.
01 — Founded as an academy, built into a C9 flagship
From Qiushi Academy to a seven-faculty research university.
The headline facts first. Zhejiang University was founded in 1897 as Qiushi Academy and is now a C9 League member, ranking 49th globally in QS 2026. It offers more than 140 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate programs across seven faculties, with total enrollment above 53,000 students, including more than 6,000 international students. Tuition for international undergraduates in engineering and science runs ¥28,000 to ¥35,000 a year, about $3,889 to $4,861, with on-campus dormitories at ¥8,000 a year, about $1,111. The university's Haining International Campus offers a separate, English-medium track for international applicants. It is organized into seven faculties and 36 schools, offers more than 140 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate programs, and reports total enrollment above 53,000 students, with more than 6,000 international students among them. Rankings bounce around depending on who's counting — QS put it 49th globally in its 2026 World University Rankings and 14th in Asia, while US News and Times Higher Education have placed it in the mid-to-high 30s and 40s in different recent cycles. Treat any single number as a snapshot, not a fixed rank.
02 — What the university is actually strong at
Engineering and applied science first, everything else built around it.
ZJU's research profile tilts hard toward engineering, computer science, materials science, and biomedical fields — a natural match for Hangzhou's platform-economy and advanced-manufacturing base. Independent research trackers credit the university with well over 300,000 published papers and several million citations, spanning chemistry, physics, environmental science, and quantum and particle physics alongside its engineering core.
The university's Haining International Campus, opened in 2016 as a joint venture, is worth flagging separately: a purpose-built international campus with roughly 2,900 students, run in partnership with overseas universities and taught mostly in English — a different door from ZJU's main Xihu-district campus and its largely Chinese-medium instruction.
That split — a historic, largely Chinese-medium main campus, and a newer, smaller, more English-forward satellite campus — is the single most important structural fact for an international applicant to get before choosing which "Zhejiang University" they're actually applying to.

05 — The honest brake

A few things I couldn't verify from a distance:
- No official acceptance rate. The 15–20% figure cited above is a third-party estimate, not a number ZJU itself discloses.
- Two campuses, two very different experiences. The main Xihu-district campus and the Haining International Campus are substantially different in language of instruction, student population, and campus culture — this page hasn't broken them down program by program, only structurally.
- Tuition and admissions terms come from aggregators, not ZJU's own admissions office. Confirm current, cycle-specific figures directly before applying.
- Degree recognition and visa rules. General direction only, never a guarantee — confirm with your own country's authorities and directly with ZJU.
